CLASS INFORMATION
Homework will be given on a Friday and returned by the following Wednesday. This should be children’s own work and they should spend roughly 30 minutes on each piece. Children should ensure it is completed to the best of their ability. Homework consists of reading, spellings and maths.

Excellent attendance and daily reading is essential. It is still beneficial to listen to children read at this age, and discussion of texts once children have read really helps their understanding. Reading to your child is also extremely important as it supports their learning even in Years 5 and 6. Reading records will be checked daily. Please sign and date your child’s reading record.

Spellings will be sent home each week ready to be learnt for a test the following week.

Times tables – we will complete times tables each practise daily so don’t forget to work on them at home. “Hit the button” is a great web based game that will help you learn them. White Rose Education also offer a free app where children can explore and develop their fluency. We also do daily times tables to support children’s table knowledge.

PE lessons are on Wednesdays. No earrings and suitable footwear please. Children will come to school in their PE on Wednesday’s with a school jumper or school cardigan.

Please ensure your child has an art shirt/apron or an old T-shirt in their bag.
Your help in ensuring children have the right resources each day is brilliant. However, as children reach the top of the school a sense of responsibility and independence is even better. It will prove invaluable once they reach secondary school.

Autumn Term 2024
Welcome back Class One – hope you all had a super and well-deserved break. It was a nice long one with lots of sunshine so we are all feeling refreshed in class one.

English
In English we are exploring  fiction and we are looking at Journey by Aaron Becker – this will be a whole school text to begin the year. We will be exploring the themes within the text, focusing on journey and adventure. In this unit, we will focus on a range of grammatical concepts, including them in our writing.

Maths
In Maths we are using mastery techniques to develop a solid knowledge base of different mathematical concepts, alongside the White Rose Education scheme of learning. This enables children to develop a deeper understanding. We will begin the year looking at Roman Numerals and then progress onto place value.

Times tables are a vital skill to improve children’s accuracy and speed in mathematics, we will work on these daily in school as part of our fluency and it is vital to continue to recall these at home too.

Science
In Science we will be completing a unit of work about “Living things and their habitats” before moving on to learn about “Properties and changes of materials.”

RE
During RE sessions we are exploring what sacred texts and other sources say about God, the world and human life, with a focus on Christianity. We will continue to pray daily and take part in collective worships and church services across the year.

History

We will be exploring the Ancient Greeks. Children will gain an understanding of chronology of key events of this time

Music
In music we will be completing a units of work on the songs “Livin’ on a prayer” and “Happy.”

Art
We will be exploring surrealism, gaining an understanding of key features that can be found in Surrealist work. We will look at a number of artists, including Paul Klee, Max Ernst and Salvador Dali.
